'90s Memories - The Special Goodness

I had totally forgotten about this song until I was recently reading up on Weezer on Wikipedia. (Hey, I don't judge what you do at work when you're bored.) I think this song got a bit of play on KROQ so that's why I remembered it. Pretty awesome band name, too, if you ask me, and I really dig that opening riff.

Shelf Life

With the exception of my favorite band, I've come to realize all of my most loved bands have a shelf life. They all seem to hit a point where I think, "I don't need any more new albums from you." Bands I really loved have put out new albums and I have yet to pick them up. Worse than that, I have no interest in hearing them at all. I've reached this point with Fastball, Third Eye Blind, 311, Seven Mary Three and several other bands I loved once upon a time. All of those bands have new albums that I have yet to pick up. I think there just comes a point where you don't need more than 25 Third Eye Blind songs. (Okay, maybe more like 14.)

Does anyone else feel like their favorite bands have a shelf life?

Not-Quite-Friendbook

Facebook is weird. I'm Facebook friends with probably 10 people that I went to high school with - I sent a request to some of them, and some requested me. I wonder about the ones that request me, what their criteria is. Do they have good memories of me and want to get back in touch? Are they just trying to add old friends from high school in hopes of scoring some drugs? I got a friend request last week from a guy who peed on my shoe in 7th grade. Yes, you read that correctly. He peed on my shoe in 7th grade in the bathroom before gym class. We were never friends in junior or high school, and I think we only had a handful of classes together. I declined his friend request, only to have him send another one two days later. Bizarre, but the point is I have no desire to be friends with the guy that peed on my shoe in 7th grade.

Naive?

In my lifetime, I've been in maybe...3 situations where an illegal drug was being used and/or offered to me. I've never tried them and I absolutely don't regret this fact of my life. So I was thinking about it, and if I really, really, wanted to try them, I would have zero idea where to start. Perhaps I am being naive about it, but I don't think any of my friends use drugs. I'll even go as far to say, I think I would be surprised if they did. (If you do, for the record, don't tell me - ignorance is bliss.) So I was just thinking about where someone like me, who has no knowledge of drugs, how much they cost or where to obtain them, would even start looking for drugs. Do people still deal on street corners? Can one find them on Craigslist?

Mind you, I'm not looking for suggestions but it just occurred to me that if I ever wanted to become a junkie, I wouldn't have the foggiest notion where to start.

Hunting

Is there anything on Earth more frustrating and exasperating than trying to buy a home? Okay, okay...I'm sure there are plenty of things but this certainly has to rank up there.

We are currently in the process of looking at a property and I think both of us feel exhausted at this point. We are the leading offer although we may still walk away from it because we think it's overpriced. There are SO many variables to consider in buying a home - that gets frustrating, too. Will we find something better next month? In three months? Will we find something cheaper next month? What if the next place doesn't have an awesome park nearby like this one does? What if we're overpaying for this place? What if the next place is cheaper but it needs $15k worth of repairs and upgrades done first?

It doesn't help that my sleep has been all f'ed up with the time change but I just feel so exhausted in this entire home buying process. Luckily, our realtor is awesome and even better, my Wife has been super awesome. I would say she feels pretty much the same way but I don't want to speak for her.

We should know by the end of this week if we got it / if we want it.

DR

For some bizarre reason, my doctor's office has never gotten my last name name right. For the sake of this story (and my own privacy), let's say my last name is Lieber. I showed up for my first appointment with them, handed them my ID and health card, and they put me in the system as Lieberg. I have told them twice to change it and both times, they told me they changed it.

Last week, I got a letter in the mail from them addressed to Chris Lieberg. *sigh*

It's really weird because each time I call for an appointment, I spell out my last name L-I-E-B-E-R, and they find me in the system. I never mention the G but it's always f'ing there on my record.

The last time I called, I spelled out my last name L-I-E-B as in Bob, E-R and the woman was like, "Okay, and your first name is Bob?" So clearly they don't hire the most intelligent people at this health group.

JD

Sadly, I did not get called into jury duty all week long even though I really, really wanted to.

In a related story, my Wife, myself, my mother-in-law and my grandmother all got called for jury duty within a two month time span. I don't know how or why they got us all so close together but it smells like a conspiracy. Apparently, if you know me or are related to me, you may be called very soon - just a heads up.

Reason #12

Presenting reason #12 why I love* my company...

I saw a mouse run down my aisle of cubicles the other day. This is the second time I've seen a mouse since I started working there last April. (Unless it was the same mouse - in which case, it's been a while, buddy!) That's what we get for working in the ghetto in an office building that used to be a food processing plant.

I told one of my bosses about it and apparently mouse sightings aren't incredibly uncommon. I'm just glad the damn thing ran down by the desks across the aisle from me. Needless to say, I spent the rest of the day with my feet off the ground.

Mark Kano is MPFree!

Remember Mark Kano, who I blogged about sometime last year? Just got an email from him and he's giving away all of his music for free. Check out this link for song downloads. You just have to enter your email address so they can send you a confirmation link, but you can get his solo album, Walking on Broadway, plus his Home Demos EP and another song all for FREE. This guy is one of my favorite singer-songwriters so please do me (and yourself!) a favor and check it out.

This video always makes me laugh. Enjoy.

JD

I start serving jury duty on Monday and with any luck, I'll be called in to report. (I'm typing this blog and setting it to publish in advance so hopefully I'm in a jury pool by the time this is published.) For some bizarre reason, I've always wanted to serve on a jury. I know everyone complains about how they don't get paid for it, and it just messes up their work routine and all that. The fact is, work sucks for most everyone these days. This is a chance to get out of the office, see some strangers and strange things and hopefully sentence someone to life in prison for hanging those God awful banners on freeway overpasses. God bless America.
