From The Story of Libraries comes this passage which was inscribed at a library in the High Middle Ages:
"If anyone attempts to carry away one of these books by theft, by fraud or in any other manner, let his name be struck from the book of the living, that he not be inscribed with the just - but instead delivered to the fire of hell, to be tormented endlessly."
Kind of makes paying 30 cents a day in late fines seem pretty light, huh? :)

I have seen that quote before! I don't know where I found it, but I think I used it from time to time as an away message when going to the library at Princeton.
I miss the old testament God. You know, the one that was always striking people down? I really wish he would have written a "Thou shalt not talk on your handheld cellphone whilst driving" commandment. Because I see at least three people doing that everyday, so the law really isn't that effective.
